Lecture 6: Understanding
Typography carries with it some nuances. It's up to the student to learn about such nuances to apply the knowledge to their future endeavors.
Letterforms
One might think upon first impression, that uppercase letterforms are symmetrical; however, with further inspection, they are the opposite. As seen in Fig. 1.1.31, each bracket connecting the serif to the stem has a unique arc.
Fig. 1.1.31 Baskerville uppercase letterform with guide boxes
Another example of subtle asymmetry in uppercase letterforms is of Univers (Fig 1.1.31). From afar, it may look symmetrical but upon closer examination, you can see that the right slope is thinner than the left.
Fig 1.1.32 Univers uppercase letterform with guide boxes
The way stems finish and how bowls meet the stems concisely reveal the complexity of a letterform/typeface. As seen in Fig. 1.1.33, Baskerville appears to have a more curved letterform because of how the stems end and the way the bowls connect to them.

! A common mistake student often makes when designing their typeface is over-decorating the letterforms. It's advised to begin with adding one feature first.Maintaining x-height
Curved strokes such as 's' must rise above the median line or sink below the baseline to make sure that they appear the same size as the other letterforms.
Fig 1.1.34 Visualization of curved stokes protruding the median line and baseline to create the visual equality in size.
Counter forms
Knowing the negative space outside of letterforms is equally important as it aids in the legibility of formatted text or letterform.
Fig. 1.1.35 Forms and counter forms
When designing a typeface, examining the counter form of your letterforms in close detail can help provide a good understanding for how the balance between the two is achieved. This can also help create uniqueness to a typeface.

Contrast
A basic principle of Graphic Design that can also be applied to typography.

Quote of the Lecture: "On the streets, you look at girls [or boys]. I look at type." - Hannes von Döhren
1.2 Face-to-Face Classes
Lecture 7 Different medium
Typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader. It involves font style, appearance, and structure, which aims to elicit certain emotions and convey specific messages.
For example, back then when they had to create there our paper the make font by using ink and carve letters into wood to make stencil.
TASK 2 - TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION & COMMUNICATION
This task is a combination between task 1 which is type expression and text formatting. You are allowed to choose 1 from 3 different text. No images and color allowed. Some very graphical minor (line, shade, etc) might allowed.
You will use adobe InDesign to finalize this task. Use size 200mm x 200mm per page. For the headline, you can use adobe illustrator to create more expression. Explore several options until you find a good one to submit. Use only 10 typefaces provided.
For the finalize, you are required to submit:
- JPEG 300 PPI, Grayscale (With grid visible and without)
- PDF (With grid visible and without)
Text formatting
3. Work progress
Text formatter is a program or online tool that helps change a text document's size, font, and other formatting attributes. It can make the text easier to read by changing the size of fonts and margins or by changing the color of certain words or phrases.

4. FEEDBACKWeek 6
General Feedback: Some of the tracking and kerning was a bit off I have to arranged that.
Specific Feedback: Ms. Hsin told me that there were some of my compositions was off and distorted and she helped me choose and that is the above photos.
5. REFLECTION
5.1 Experience
This task is a combination from the previous task, so i could said that if we just clear the task 1 first, we won't really find it difficult to do this task, for example like limited experienced using adobe. When i did this task, I planned it from beginning until end like the task 1. The work is progressing smoothly until i just worried that what if my idea had the similarity like others. Due to limited exploration (like only using simple shape), sometimes we could find that our design had the same meaning and expression. From this task, I learned that think out of the box is very important for designer to avoid similarity idea.
5.2 Observation
When I choose this text editorial to starting this task there were other text but this one, I saw that it was simple, and I didn't want to do something complicate, I tried it out first with the text that I have chosen there were many ways that I could have done the design using the text or not. I ended up choose the text "A code to build on and by".
5.3 Findings
I found that time management is useful when working on this task. Due to the short deadline, we have to keep progressing every week. Therefore, near the deadline, we don't need to overnight racing.
Moreover, I suggested to read the MIB (Module Information Booklet) firstly to know the rules of the task and assessment criteria.
6. FURTHER READINGS
Research
I have done some research about the layouts and grid also have read a book "A Type primer 2nd by John Kane who explain about the fonts about tracking and kerning how the fonts look when you apply those two.
