Task 1: Exercise 1&2
LECTURES 1 (WEEK 1 TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEM
The Typographic system refers to the structured hierarchy and organization of type within a design. It encompasses various elements such as typefaces, font sizes, line spacing, line length, and color choices that works together to create a cohesive and harmonious design also layout when using the 8 typographic system.
Week 1: We were explaining the module how it would be that Mr. Vinod briefs us about and also how to begin preparing ourselves.
The above are examples of the 8 typographic system.
- Axial
- Radial
- Dilatational
- Random
- Grid
- Modular
- Transitional
- Bilateral
Fig.1 28/04/2024 week 1
Axial: All elements are organized to the left or right of a single axis.
Radial: All elements are extended from a point of focus.
Dilatational: All elements expand from a central point to a circular fashion.
Dilatational: All elements expand from a central point to a circular fashion.
Random: Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relation.
Grid: A system of vertical and horizontal division.
Modular: A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as a standardish unit.
Modular: A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as a standardish unit.
Transitional: An infernal system layered bending.
Bilateral: All texted is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.
WEEK 2 LECTURES
W2 What is expected in the next class (Week 3)
1 watch 2nd lecture and document summary in your portfolio
2 view previous students portfolio examples to see how documentation was carried out for Ex.2; "Finding Type" (Type & Play)
3 Documents Ex.2: " Finding Type" process work in eportfolio
4 Final Submission should consist of:
- Image
-Extracted Letterforms on baseline (illustration
-Reference font
-Final letterforms on baseline
-Original extraction and final letterforms next to each other
5 For Further Reading you may read this article related to the exercise (or any other book)
General Feedback Task 1 and 2:
WEEK 3 Lecture (WEEK 3 Context & Creativity)
Handwriting is the basic and standards of a form with spacing and conventions machine and mimics. hand drawn are form with lines and shapes of the letterforms are influence by materials and tools that is used to create them.
1. Cuneiform (c.3000 BCE)
The earliest lettering that existed at that time used mostly numbers of languages that was thought through the centuries.
The characters also evolved from pictograms and was place into written form left to right.
The lecture also discusses the evolution of the Latin alphabet, from its earlies form to the Roman alphabet.
Writing system developed using pictures, symbols, and sounds to represent ideas and words.
example of written language. Subject: The Evolution of Writing System
The Egyptian hieroglyphs were a mix of rebus and phonetic characters, while the Phoenician system was mainly phonetic.
The Greeks added vowels and organized their writing onto horizontal lines, but the direction of system reading was not fixed. Subject: The influence of writing Styles on the Development of Greek and Roman Letters
Early Greek Letters were drawn freehand and later developed formalized strokes.
WEEK 4 Lectures Designing Types
Exploring and learning:
Deep Research: Start by learning about the history of fonts, how they're built, and the rules that govern them.
Purpose and Use: Decide what your font will be used for and where, think about different places it might show up, like on signs or in books.
Getting Ideas from others: Look at existing fonts to get inspired and see how they're used.
Getting Creative:
Sketching Ideas: Start drawing your font on paper or a computer, whichever you prefer.
Turning Ideas into Digital Fonts:
Digitalization: To make your font digital, you'll need special computer programs like Font lab or Glyphs App. Some people also use Adobe Illustrator, but some experts don't like that.
Checking and changing:
Testing Your Font: Try out your font and see how it works. Fix and problems you find.
Prototypes and feedback: Make sample versions of your font and get feedback from others to make it better.
Easy to read or beautiful Design: Think about whether your font is easy to read or if it's more about looking cool. It depends on if it's going to be used for big headlines or small text.
Putting It out there and making better.
Refinement: Even when your font is out in the world, there might be little issues you don't see before.
Always improving: Keep working on your font to make it even better. Test it often to catch any small problems.
WEEK 5 Lectures
Perception & Organization Lecture:
Perception in typography involves visual navigation and interpretation through contrast, form, and organization.
Form's role in visual impact and first impressions discussed.
Introduction to Gestalt theory principles: Whole greater than parts, law of similarity, law of proximity, law of closure, law of good continuation.
Mr. Vinod emphasized the social responsibility of designers in organizations information for effective communication and knowledge transfer.
INSTRUCTIONS
EXERCISE 1
Typographic System
-For this exercise as given to us we were supposed to use the 8 typographic system to design our layout using InDesign as follow in the module booklet:
Fig.1.1 week 1 28/04/2024
-By choosing from these three and also with the information below to include with our process of designing. size: 200mm x 200mm, only one other besides black, Graphical elements can be used but limitedly.
PROGRESSION
As for an example of Mr. Vinod recapping with us about using InDesign to fresh from what we learned from semester 1 last year by in his videos using Axial where he shows before and after the text when aligning it before making it croaked.
Fig 1.4 week 2 29/04/2024
First idea of the typography system Axial on the left the top lettering was not accurate also the next one was also not proportion and is not align well with the single axis.
Specific feedback: The first trial Mr. Vinod said is good, but the place of the event was missing so I had to arrange it and make it on the axis. For the second one it was out of balance and wasn't good so for this I had to replace it also with the same but in another way.

EXERCISE 2
TYPE & PLAY
For my exercise 2 I choose the idea and references pipes like you can see below the different types of pipes and I went with the three one that was more interesting for me.
Fig.2.3 week 3 06/05/2024
Fig.2.4 week 3 06/05/2024
As the progress of breaking down and looking for the letters I finally found them and was wavey and cave way like pipes supposed to be I have extracted the fonts from the reference and as you can see in the photo above the extraction is a bit out of place, so I tired making it straight.
For my font that I choose is Gill sans MT which is the same approach as the lettering I have extracted almost same resemblance.
