Week 1

Mr. Hafiz briefed us to the Illustration and Visual Narrative module, along with joining the Microsoft Teams and Google classroom.

He talked about the assignments, project and the e-portfolio.

The fist task is a character design in a pokemon card worth 20% of our grade

The second task is a minimalist poster worth 20% of our grade

The third task is a comic panel worth 20% of our grade

All of our tasks, exercises, and projects will be upload in our e-portfolio.

Week 2
Mr. Hafiz explained the exercise for the Vormator exercise.
Mr. Hafiz introduced us to the Curvature Tool on Adobe Illustrator

Week 3
Chiaroscuro

use of light and dark to create the illusion of 3d volumes on a flat surface.

Week 1

Pen tool exercise
Mr. Hafiz gave us a link to the Bezier Game in order for us to get the hang of the pen too. He challenged us to get the car level in 9 nodes, which I completed.

Vormator Challenge
The Vormator Challenge is challenging our creativity and create a character design from the shapes given. We're allowed to duplicate, flip, rotate, scale the shapes, but we are not allowed to distort the shapes in any form.

This is an example of the Vormator Challenge.

For Week 2-3 we were supposed to come up with a silhouette for the character. These are the ones that I came up with the same Illustration:

Week 2
VORMATOR SHAPES

I used the pen tool and curvature tool to trace out the shapes for the Vormator exercise.

Week 3
LIGHT AND SHADOW

For Week 3, Mr. Hafiz introduced us to the Pathfinder tool, the Knife Tool, and the pencil tool. We learned about Chiaroscuro, and we did an exercise with coloring a pear with elements such as lighting and shadows.

Chiaroscuro
Using shapes, establishing light and dark. Giving it weight.

Drawing in chiaroscuro (...or the line that never existed anyway)

The lines we draw in an average illustration do not exist in reality, they are only a means for us to define on paper the space that the objects depicted by such lines occupy. But since the perception of such objects might change dramatically depending mainly on lighting choices, are these lines that important after all? Obviously, we will need a good knowledge of traditional line drawing before we get into further concepts like the ones we are talking about now. Training in this discipline will allow us to place every item (objects as well as masses of light and dark) where and how we want and need them on our drawing surface.

  • Pathfinder
  • Shape Builder
  • Knife Tool

Feedback:

In general, the practice is alright and am doing good with my lessons but just somethings to change to fix.

Week 4 Color and blending mode

The Lesson
In Illustrator, there are six blending modes: Normal, Darken, Lighten, Contrast, Inversion, and Component. Each of these modes works a little differently, so it's important to know which one to use for which effect. You can find them in the “Appearance” section under the “Properties” tab on the right menu.

We have to take this photo that our lecturer has provide us with for us to start our pen skill by doing the outline first and the then shadows to create some depth.

This is how it turn into we started with tracing continue till the end the final layout.

This is when adding texture where the place have shadows.

Week 6-7 Composition and Depth

Fig 2.2.3 My sketches for my characters with shapes

I have use the vormater shapes to create the character on the right and also the left that I was going for a cat sort of Demon characters.

Fig 2.2.4 when I had added colors and the texture and effects.

I was going for a scary night mode for my pokeman cards and also creepy.

FINAL DESIGN

4.Reflection

6.1 Experience

From this exercise I have learned a new experience to understand more adobe illustrator even I have used it before, I have previously learned that there is more than just pen tool and other tools that I have used for this exercise for example how to apply grain into your artwork to make it look more efficient.

6.2 Observation

As for me I find it hard doing this module online because it is a first for me and also to follow the tutorials and doing the practical that sometimes I don't understand when Mr. Hafiz gives us to work on, sometimes I have to searched for information about the topic itself for me to understand for clearly seen I have seen Mr. Hafiz face to face and gotten a more understanding I have understood more.

6.3 Findings

It is not just about the artwork itself; it is about the combination of the principles of art to create a good composition by just using the element for example: shapes, texture, light and shadow and more but one thing I have learn is that by using those elements you can create mainly any character like for vormator task I didn't understand that in the first class was finding hard to do and then got the hang of it that was easy and fun the create.
